In the seven years James and I have been married, I have received 3 speeding tickets and he has received zero. This is not to say James doesn’t speed and I do – he just has luck on his side. We left Pittsburgh at 2am to drive to our new home Midland, Michigan so that we could get a few hours of sleep before we left and so that Kate would sleep through most of the drive since she hates being in her car seat for any length of time. About 4:30am, we were nearing Sandusky, OH and James was driving in the far right hand lane going about 50mph. Another car was traveling in the middle lane in position so that his lights were reflecting in our side view mirror and blinding James. James got sick of holding his hand up to block the lights, so he sped up a bit to get away from him. Well, the car sped up as well. Then, James tried slowing down to let the car pass him, but instead of passing him, the car got behind James. By this point, James was sick of this guy, so he hit the gas hard to speed up quickly and get away from him and then we saw the red and blue lights flashing. James was getting pulled over and I thought for sure he was going to get his first speeding ticket. Not that I wanted him to get a ticket, but it would have made me feel a little bit better about my three tickets! The cop comes to the window, sees Kate, and then asks James to step out of the car for a minute. We thought he was going to give James a sobriety test and I was laughing to myself thinking that James was going to fail since he was so tired. Turns out he asked James to step back so that he could talk to him and find out why James was speeding and not wake up Kate. The cop told James to make sure he goes the speed limit – especially in construction zones as that is where most accidents happen and to keep his family safe. So not only did he not get a ticket, but he escaped getting a fines doubled ticket!! The funny thing is that he was only speeding to get the light out of his eyes – otherwise he was driving the speed limit the whole way. It was definitely a close call and gave us something to laugh about!
